Goods and Services Tax (GST) is the indirect tax charged on most goods and services in India. If you run a business, you need to add the right GST to your prices; if you're a buyer holding a GST-inclusive bill, you may want to know how much of it is tax. Our GST calculator does both in a second, and breaks the tax into CGST and SGST or IGST so it matches how an invoice is written.
For example, adding 18% GST to ₹10,000 gives GST of ₹1,800 and a total of ₹11,800. Going the other way, a bill of ₹11,800 that includes 18% GST has a net price of ₹10,000 — note that you divide by 118, you don't simply subtract 18% from the total.
Following the GST Council's 2025 rationalisation, which took effect on 22 September 2025, most items now sit in one of three main slabs, plus 0% for exempt goods and services:
| Rate | Generally applies to |
|---|---|
| 0% | Exempt and nil-rated items, such as certain essentials. |
| 5% | Essentials and many everyday items, including goods moved down from the older 12% slab. |
| 18% | The standard rate for most goods and services. Items such as air conditioners, TVs and cement moved here from the old 28% slab. |
| 40% | Luxury and "sin" goods, such as tobacco products and caffeinated or carbonated drinks. |
The older 12% and 28% slabs were largely removed, though they still appear on invoices raised before the change. A few special rates, such as 3% on gold and silver, are handled through the custom rate box. Always check the rate for your specific item or service.
